What are the surgical treatment options?
Non-surgical treatment options are typically prescribed by the doctor in the beginning. Medications to reduce inflammation may be tried, particularly oral cortisone medication tempered with pain medication to give the patient relief. Drugs meant specifically to allay nerve pain can be tried, such as gabapentin (Neurontin) and pregabalin (Lyrica).
Cortisone or steroid injections in the lumbar spine allows the drugs to be delivered straight to the affected area. This would improve the swelling and inflammation around the nerve tissue. If this course of treatment is taken, the injections may be done three times a year. Physical therapy may be effective with some patients as well.
